While a strong El Niño has suppressed Atlantic hurricanes this year, a potent, slow-moving Nor'Easter threatens the Northeast Coast this weekend. Already producing coastal flooding in the Mid-Atlantic States, the storm is expected to crawl northward and intensify in the coming days.
Fifty to sixty mph winds are forecast to lash the region, accompanied by torrential rain and coastal flooding. Long Island and southern New England appear to be at the greatest risk of storm damage though major disruption of travel and outdoor events will occur from Virginia to Maine.
Named for their strong, persistent, northeast winds, Nor'Easters are most common in late winter. To experience one in late September is very rare, perhaps the latest sign of our warming climate.
